Chapter 5

Inoculating the Substrate

Now is the time for the important part. It is time to give the spores a home‚ an environment for them to germinate and thrive in - the sterilized rice cake (a.k.a. the substrate). Make sure your gloves and mask are on and you are ready to begin the inoculation process. And this is how you do it:

Start by working with one jar at a time. Carefully peel off the aluminum foil to expose the lid and four holes. Remove the cap from the spore syringe. Slowly begin to push the tip of the needle through the first hole, at an angle so as to press the beveled (“angled”) edge against the inner face of the glass. Push the plunger of the syringe to inject 1/4 cc of spore solution. Repeat this procedure for the other three holes.

One spore syringe should accommodate approximately (10) half pint mason jars‚ which if done properly‚ will yield a very large number of highly nutritious specimens. At this point the inoculation procedure is complete.
